Notre Dame vs USC

The defining moment(s) arrive for this Notre Dame team in the next 2 games.

First up– USC (5-1). First real test for the ND secondary with Matt Barkley at QB. This guy can throw and everyone knows if he played last year USC would have won that game. This is not the powerhouse teams of the Pete Carroll era but they are good enough to beat this ND team. They have a great receiver in Woods, they will try to match him up against Gary Gray as well as the ILB’S.

Barkley is basically a pocket passer–so ND’s pass rush is critical–Aaron Lynch must have a super game.

A lot is riding on this game–ND’s season as well as recruiting–ton of prospects will attend. Atmosphere will be electric and don’t be surprised if the Green Jersey is worn.

Week 2–Navy and the option game. I am not buying that “we planned to give up yards but not points” ND has not solved the option at all–this will be a tough game

The key to both games is ND’s OL play and QB Rees.
Hope the bye week doesn’t put Rees back to game 1–USF.

Nightmare Coming to ND

For those of you who missed Air Force/Navy game last Saturday here’s a you tube clip of the highlights:

I watched this game and let me tell you Air Force is scary quick. They are a multiple option offense led by Tim Jefferson, who can run and pass and he passes very well –like a 70% completion rate.

They present an instant headache for a defensive coordinator with over 500 yds per game and averaging 39 pts per game.

Their QB has been running this offense for 4 years–he’s expert at it.

For AF it’s really a super hurry up offense and they don’t let up.

You absolutely can’t wait and react–ND’s defensive line is going to have to overwhelm–literally throw the AF offensive line into the backfield to disrupt this attack, and that’s on every play.

The ND offense cannot fool around–the line has to maul and pound them and they have to score TD’s and a lot of them. Will need 40 points to win this game.

ND VS USC

Well, this is it. Has ND really progressed or was Utah off that day or overrated–forget Navy.

Mustain who has been in college for what seems 10 yrs will probably start. He is not that bad a QB and certainly has more experience than Rees.

Haven’t seen USC this year but they are 7-4 and the only blowouts were vs, Oregon State and Oregon–they did score 32 pts against Oregon. They lost to Stanford by 2pts. We did very poorly ag. Stanford.

USC played a tougher schedule than ND including wins ag. Cal, Arizona and Arizona State.

Keys to a ND victory:

  1. stop the run
  2. harass the QB continuously
  3. ND must be able to run the ball or it’s all over.

Think only way ND wins is turnovers. This is going to be a very tough game and whoever plays 4 quarters will win. Rees will have to be damn near perfect for ND to win and, of course, the OL must play their best game of the year. The OL is the key to this game–if they relapse it’s over early.

John Goodman–lot has been written about his productivity on punts, Every game I saw he had a guy right in front of him before he even caught the ball. If they can set up the punt return properly I would let Floyd do the returns.

Final Score

ND 21 USC 20

Retro–Interesting–same plays 2009 vs 2010. Obviously defensive coaches learned very little–sorta like they didn’t even look at 2009 tape. Same exact plays in 2010. Now somebody is stupid here and certainly not the Navy coaches.  Offensive line play –no difference.

What I find more interesting is coaching–keep your eye on the clock in 2009 game.

Charlie never quit– Kelly with 6 minutes left? Hmm what do you think?

You pick the coach–forget about defense-concentrate on offense and time.

Navy Aftermath 2010

Navy, first off, gets kudos for this win.  Navy is starting to control ND’s destiny–starting with getting Weis fired and basically losing his team for the final games of 2009.  I, for one, would have liked to see what he would have done this year–if he had been able to keep Clausen and Tate.  Let’s face it Navy has arrived with the option and cut blocks.  That being the case–on with the recap:

DAYNE CRIST–this kid should be starting his second year at some other University in a Pro Set.  He came to ND to play for Weis and was willing to wait his turn.  If Weis knew anything he knew a good QB when he saw one.  To lay this loss on Crist would be a travesty.  He never was a Spread QB and I think for him to overcome all that he learned before and shazzam be a Spreader with all the different reads is asking way too much.  Compound that with the constant screaming at him by Kelly.  The idea is to keep your QB somewhat calm during a game.  This kid is frazzled.

To keep it simple–just ND’s 1st possession–13 plays Christ flushed and had 3 runs.  Now let’s put the blame where it belongs the, drum roll, OFFENSIVE LINE.  Navy 4 vs our 5 and Crist no time to make reads, harassed and running for his life.  That continued whole game.

OFFENSIVE LINE–continuing the tradition of not being able to run or pass block.  While I like Martin, the others are just horrible.  Put that guard Watt in–get him some experience.  Robinson got thrown right back into Crist and pass did not go where it was intended- i forget what happened to it .  If you can alternate DL do the same for OL.  Kelly should be screaming at them not the QB.

OL grade–awful or disgraceful.

DEFENSIVE LINE–Can’t get any worse.  Not only no penetration but not once kept the Navy guards off ILB’s,  When Navy did pass 2 to 3 times no one touched the QB. I focused on one play and cut block involved–the D lineman was actually backing up to avoid the block. Grade–Really Bad.

OLB’S–how do you describe when they were nowhere near anyone -did they play at all? No Grade.

ILB’S I really like the combo of Teo and Carlo.  Who the hell’s idea was it to play so far off the ball–giving away 5 yds before ball snapped and OG’s already on them.  If the first priority is to stop the FB the ILB’s should have been closer and rushing the lanes– jam the middle up. GRADE-bad coaching.

DB’s SAFTIES–oh well-3 passes entire game -we know how that turned out.

KICK RETURNS–we must have someone slower.

COACHING–guess.

STRENGTH COACH–check with the Navy guy.  Bet they have no one who can lift 200 lbs let alone 5-600 lbs.  All that running in sand etc leaves us with a whole team with hamstrings, bad ankles and knees.

CONCLUSION–why not–blame Weis

Shock & Awe Navy 35 N.D. 17

On a beautiful day in NJ, ND walked onto the field and literally got the ever loving shit kicked out of them.  Again by an undersized Middie team that beat them in every facet of the game.

The question before the house is now:  Will ND ever beat Navy again?  Answer–not with these players.

Alert to commits and possible commits–immediate opportunity’s exist for you to play early–maybe by next week. If any of you saw this game (Prestwood(let’s recommit), Hegarty) you could start next week.  Also all of the defensive commits–you too will play a lot in 2011–just watch the re-run of this game.

There is really not a lot to say–except that ND walked out on the field and got the everloving shit kicked out of everyone who walked onto the field.  Navy took all those 3,4 &5 star recruits(on both sides of the ball) and crushed them.

Three plays and this game over–decided in 1st quarter.  ND- 4th and one at goaline–did not gain one inch.  Navy 1st play-50 yds fullback dive.  Swing pass to FB a TD. Game really over right there.

I sure am glad that ND practiced option all year (eyes you know) reduce cut blocks–I still think they should be banned–but we solved that.

Posters- I had to ban Michigan Man for awhile.  I’ve been assured he’s gone thru detox and can now control himself.

Have a few photos from game–nice arena to attend a game.

Well let’s see.  Just run it down their throat–problem with that is we haven’t shown that we can do the required run blocking on anyone except WM in 2nd half.  Well then just pass it–not convinced we can pass block either.

Let’s face it Navy comes to play hard, tough football for 4 quarters–we don’t. So I go back to 2009 game and hope we don’t miss 2 field goals.  If Clausen could only put up 21 points I’ll go with a ND win by 3.

Final score ND 23  Navy 20

Like to see ND’s Jersey guys play well. Ragone is due for some good fortune.

Navy Week 2010

As the game nears, I am hopeful that ND can come up with some kind of defensive scheme that allows  Teo and Calabrese to just concentrate on the run.

They do not handle pass coverage well–so just let them loose to kill the ballcarrier.  Navy is just too fast and they are too inexperienced to have to worry about both .  Just let them do what they do best and let the safeties do the pass coverage.  Defense will have enough problems with cut/chop blocks.

Fonder memories–see clip 1964 game.  Ara’s first year and Huarte wins the Heisman.

NAVY WEEK MUSINGS – 10/19/2010

Earlier posts hammering Navy as cheap shot artists may be misunderstood.  Certainly when we are at war due respect must be shown to our soldiers in the field.  Ok I’m cool with that , but these guys at Navy are not returning warriors so their style of play is fair game.  I never had a problem with Army or Air Force when they ran the same offense–they seem to have a higher (ethical) quality of player than Navy.  I had not thought of last yrs game that much and came across a few highlight videos–see below–not very pretty but instructive.

I originally thought that this is the year we really pulverize them, but film clips clearly show that Navy kicked our asses all over the field last year. We had Clausen Tate Floyd and a senior dominated OL yet could only score 21 points.  Despite cut blocks Navy hit a whole lot harder and played much tougher than ND. My optimism has faded fast.
Especially nervous on hearing we have a handle on Navy offense since have been practicing it for 4-5 weeks.  Eerily reminiscent of Tenuta bragging he knew everything that could be known about it and had no worries.  Again pass right down middle of field for TD–tradition continues.  ILB’s Teo and Smith got bounced around like pinballs.
