HEARTBURN
As we await to find out our Bowl Game opponent and lick our wounds and heal our Injuries I took a look at next years schedule and I would like to know what lunatic set this schedule up!!!!! This is so totally incredible that very best we can do is 6-6 even if Vince Lombardi was the coach and Joe Montana was our QB. Take a look.
2012 SCHEDULE
09/01/2012 Navy (Croke Park – Dublin, INTL)
09/08/2012 PURDUE
09/15/2012 at Michigan State
09/22/2012 MICHIGAN
10/06/2012 MIAMI (Solider Field)
10/13/2012 STANFORD
10/20/2012 BYU
10/27/2012 at Oklahoma
11/03/2012 PITT
11/10/2012 at Boston College
11/17/2012 WAKE FOREST
11/24/2012 at USC
Check out games 2 thru 8. Number 4 Miami will be better simply due to their coach. Number 8 Pitt will improve considerably with the coaching staff they now have.
We have no QB, we lose Floyd and possibly Teo and Eifert and our opening game Navy will probably leave us with 2 knee injuries let alone other injuries that will accrue.
How can any coach be expected to succeed with this impossible lineup and topped off with USC coming off probation in 2012. We should immediately drop Michigan and substitute Indiana.

Matt Fortuna thinks 7-5 or worse because of this schedule. I’m a bit more optimistic. The schedule is brutal based off 2011 teams but SC, MSU and Stanford are losing some key players. I also don’t think they should shy away from a touch schedule and need to beat the best to be the best. It’s surely going to test them but I’d rather play a higher level of competition than a bunch of cupcakes. In the long run, it will make the program better.
Hey Shane–normally I would agree with you–want good opponents, but not right now. Not enough depth and you can’t build depth without subs getting lots of playing time.
Injuries–example-Frosh DT Hounshell plays part of 2 games and injures shoulder–not strong enough to battle senior OL 300 pounders. Also blows a year.
Purdue,MSU and Michigan in a row? They may not be that good but they all have big OL & DL’s –that’s 3 in a row of pounding–just think it’s too much for what we now have.
Candid interview with George Paterno–Joe’s brother and radio game announcer was once asked why all the cupcakes on PSU schedule–his reply–can really only play 5 tough games a year with 85 scholies plus blowouts let’s you play a lot of 2nd & 3rd teamers which equals quality depth. You want the cupcakes early to get w’s plus get offense in a groove.
All that said, I sure hope you’re right and I’m wrong.
I agree, Shane for contibuting editor. : )
You make some good points Shane but I have to agree with ND Editor. I think the season needs to be broken up differently in the future. By the time November rolls around everybody will be on crutches. The one thing I would like to see in the fuure is the final game of the season played at Notre Dame and not out west. We don’t have to schedule that last game in Cali anymore. I know they do it for recruiting purposes but we all know Kelly and crew can jump on a plane at anytime they want. Final note- I think Shane should be a contributing editor to this site. That’s my wishlist for now.
I see your point–why not schedule ND at home for last game–think recruits. Good observation.
As to Shane–solid–I agree he could write his own column(un-edited) on this site if he has something he really wants comment or vent on.
Shane, up to you, but would like your comments anyhow.
