Tommy Rees and Carlo Calabrese Arrested

Tommy Rees arrested, pepper sprayed and jailed on various serious charges including battery on police officer. Carlo Calabrese arrested on misdemeanor disorderly conduct released after posting $150 bond. Both scheduled for a May 17th court date. Then they have to deal with Resident board and of course Brian Kelly.

For full report check out Southbend Tribune.

Well that pares the QB race to 3– sorry way for Rees to end up.

Carlo may get a pass from Res. Life since it looks like he was just trying to run away when caught–either way both have problems.

Cam McDaniel CB 5’10” 195 lbs

With the logjam at running back McDaniel moved to defense and acquitted himself well during the Blue-Gold game. He certainly looked fast enough to stay with the receivers and was in position just not tall enough to battle the TE’s. and other tall receivers–reminded me of Stan Smagalia who eventually started at CB.

McDaniel has good quickness moves and speed and should be a standout on special teams. Don’t know how good his hands are but would at least give him a shot at punt returner. He should also be short field kickoff returner.

Time will tell but Kelly shouldn’t squander this talent.

Make That 12 commits 2013 Class

Mike Heuerman 6’4″ 220 lb TE Naples Fla. commits to Notre Dame over Ohio State, Miami and LSU. Just a tremendous pick up and kudos to coach Alford who works the Fla. recruiting trail. Heuerman is a real time quality player and think he’s fast enough to play WR but could easily be a faster Tyler Eifert. Here is a highlight reel of Mike Heuerman in action:

Double pleasure here in beating out Urban who no doubt will dog this kid right up to signing day. No worry here about leaving Fla since brother Jeff plays TE at OSU. Really likes the ND players as well as Tony Alford.

So that position filled–need a rb, lb’s, dl men and cb’s. Looks like 8-9 slots left.

This is really starting to look like a monster recruiting class.

ABC will televise ND vs. Michigan State Game prime time 8 PM.

Dayne Crist named co-captain at Kansas.

Something gnawing at me watching Hendrix- couldn’t put my finger on it then while perusing another site, someone commented that he just looks awkward running and throwing and that’s it.

Great video put up by und.com check it out:

Lynch Bull

South Florida issued press release that Aaron Lynch is now a member of their football team. In all likelihood they will attempt to get Lynch on the field for 2012 similar to the Amir Carlisle USC to ND deal . Otherwise he can’t play until 2013. I think he gets same deal Carlisle got.

Brian Kelly made no attempt to keep Lynch which reminded me of how Joe Paterno used to handle these situations–he just said No–you honor your commitment-no release.

Speaking of JoPa–PSU should do the right thing and rename Beaver stadium in his name. He spent what 60 years coaching there and and pushed PSU into the big time in college football. Never be another coach like him.

Blue-Gold Commit #11

John Montelus 6’5″ 300 lb OL Mass. becomes the final OL commit after attending the BG game. That leaves 9-10 available to fill this class. Probably the best haul of OL in 20 years–all big mean and aggressive.

BG Game–still disappointed in QB play but on further review think Kelly must pick the guy in advance of Fall practice giving him 4 weeks to get in a groove, get most of the reps and just go with it—–Golson looks the smoothest–so 4 weeks plus the Navy Purdue games and with really running the “O” should be ready for the tougher games to follow. Kelly just cannot dick around–pull the trigger and go. Hendrix # 2.

BG Game — 2 underclass men jump out as players #56 Anthony Rabasa and # 59 Jarret Grace both ILB’s. Both should see a lot of playing time this season. Don’t know who # 54 is but he played a lot on defense–anybody know who he is–let me know.

LB prospect apparently commits to OSU so let’s get Mastrogiovani from Texas.

Blue – Gold Game

Great day for football and George Atkinson stole the show–wow this guy can really go. Best player on the field today.

Won’t bother about the score or who won, don’t care but the OL handled the DL rather easily in my opinion. All the RB’s looked great but the QB’s still remain a major problem as far as I’m concerned. Kiel is out of the running–just not ready. Rees is out–looks just as he did last year. Hendrix up and down, threw a TD and a Pic. Golson looked good at times 2 TD’s and no Pics but put the ball on ground twice. No Jimmy Clausen in this group.

So what the hell does Kelly do. Hopefully all 4 go to some QB school this summer.

If I had to guess based just on this game it’s Hendrix Golson or the reverse.

I didn’t see Troy Niklas at all and I really wanted to see what he can do at TE. If he’s 4th on depth chart I would move him to DE for what I could see we are going to seriously going to miss Lynch. Believe we are just a couple of injuries away on defense from a disaster.

Still it’s hard to tell from just this scrimmage but with schedule we have this is looking really dicey. I expected a much better QB performance.

Aaron Again

Well it seems Lynch made a unilateral decision to leave ND without consulting coaches, other support staff or even his mother, Alice Lynch tweeted begging honorary captain Justin Tuck to talk some sense into her son.

I’m sure some of the current players also tried to convince him to stay–not sure how hard, if at all, Kelly tried.

What an absolutely tragic mistake this kid is making.

Winding Down

From the brief glance we get via und.com and some comments made, it looks like none of the QB’s is really standing out. That being the case who gets the start–each one has drawbacks and at this stage it seems to me that Kiel will redshirt. So that leaves 3. No inside knowledge but think it’s between Rees and Golson. Rees starts but Golson inserted early if offense rolling and eventually becomes the starter by mid-year. Odd man out-Hendrix, however, all 3 could play since all 3 expected to run and possibly injured.

Defense–there is a lot of talk about depth–so no worries except when injuries start popping up then the loss of Lynch could really hurt.

Impressive players so far:

  • Chris Watt — # 66 OG
  • Zack Martin — # 70 OT
  • Kap Moore — # 89 DE
  • Kona Schwenke — # 96 DE
  • Sheldon Day — # 91 DE
  • Jarret Grace — # 59 ILB
  • Anthony Rabasa — # 56 ILB
  • Justin Utopo — # 53 ILB
  • Ben Councell — # 30 OLB
  • Cam McDaniel — # 33 CB

Tuitt and Nix look really strong but from what I’ve seen both Martin and Watt look like really tough guys and usually win their battles. Watt routinely beats Teo from what I’ve seen.

We’ll all get a better idea especially QB Saturday–great if someone really breaks out in that game.
