What To Expect

Here’s a snapshot of what you can expect from here on out until game day provided by und.com

Not a lot to see but that’s all you are going to get.

I have been forgetting some things–example Anthony Rabassa who I thought would see field early. I know he had shoulder surgery last year but nada this year–anyone know if he continues to have medical problems? Let me know.

What Did We Learn Fom Media Day

I already beat up on the uniform so this post will try to read into what the coaches and players were saying about the team the coaches teammates etc–you can go to und.com for they have a slew of videos of the days events. I’ve added a clip here of the actual practice on August 16th–sure looks like a lot of speed out there and better yet the guys look excited and motivated.

I can understand Kelly holding his cards close but I think he tipped his hand talking about Golson. He was explaining Golson’s consistency indicating Golson threw the ball (so far in practice) 126 times with just one interception. He then moved along but what is interesting that he did not bring up Hendrix’s name at all–so the only conclusion you can come to is–Golson will be the starter. We should learn more next week when we start prep for Navy.

Other insights include a few minor injuries with just Nicols out for a couple of weeks and a watch on Spond. Dan Fox was wearing a shoulder brace and that’s a concern since Calabrese will not play in the Navy Game.

The coach interviews were interesting especially Diaco who looks like a movie star but at the end of his interview I’m not sure what he said.

Swarbrick was non commital on field turf and jumbotron or anything else, I want both–anything to help the players and coaches win games and win recruits. I also think it’s time for names on the uniforms–I never bought into the Joe Paterno deal about team vs individuals. Let the players decide–names go both ways excellent play as well as scew ups. Also would help the viewer identify subs coming into the game.

Ok here’s the clip–good throws and catches–unfortunately can’t really tell who’s throwing the ball. Anyhow, enjoy for probably last view of a practice and we just have to wait for the Navy game September 1st.

Circus Circus

I would guess by now that most Notre Dame fans have seen the new uniform for the Shamrock game against Miami in Chicago. C’mon let’s just get a little serious here–these uniforms are ghastly and comical. I simply cannot understand how the usual savvy Notre Dame publicity machine and Jack Swabrick could agree to such an atrocity. I also cannot understand how a savvy competitive organization like Adidas could even propose this uniform to Notre Dame.

Adidas is in a very competitive market and surely could come up with something cool/ hip but they come up with a clown uniform.

I’m all for having a little fun in the Shamrock Series–yea jazz things up a little but this defies all good marketing sense–just look at that abortion of a helmet–a grade schooler could do better.

I know Kelly wants to create a more energetic atmosphere for home games but everything he has done has backfired badly–think the night game against USC last year. What did we have–about 25 recruits and didn’t land any with the exception of a late Kiel commit. Despite all the hoopla Notre Dame came out flat and scared and lost a game they could have won. This whole thing reminds me how Kelly used theatrics at Cinncy and other places to promote his Div 2 teams and we looked like a Div 2 team against USC.

There is so much you can do with the ND history and colors and symbols to present a hip uniform and helmet but this outfit is laughable.

Forget night games–we do not have the players to stay up that late–they can barely play 4 quarters during the day games. I want it proved to me that this Longo stuff is actually doing anything better than previous strength coaches.

Another gripe I have is Manti Teo having to play every down even against bad or mediocre teams even when he’s hobbling around–we must have some backup that could spell him for a few plays and,of course, that builds depth. Same goes for other positions.

Right now too much smoke and mirrors hiding not enough good football.

Night games we could get smoked 1- Michigan State 2- Michigan 3- Miami.

Brian Kelly answered questions as the half way part of camp ended. Starting next Monday the team will prep for Navy which means we have a new QB starting with that practice. The bet here is Golson.

Other issues:

Tate Nicols (OT) has a bad kneecap–2 weeks out. Only problem here is that this seems to be a continuing problem and further depletes the OL depth.

Cam McDaniel goes back to running back but will cross train

Mathias Farley making it a battle with Dan McCarthy for the third safety position.

Danny Spond–migraines–was hospitalized–cleared to play but being withheld from practice.

New uniform unveiled for the Chicago Miami game–helmet pebbled gold on one half while the Leprechaun will be on the other side–all jazzed up uniform for that game.

Once again this is a very tough schedule with more night games which we usually lose–for some reason the ND players wilt completely at night.

Mike Golic rips ESPN’s Rick Reilly a new one for the usual yearly article about ND being irrelevant.

Great Memories

You gotta check out Eric Murtaugh’s One Foot Down article today and film clips–will really pump you up–great plays from great team.
Great seeing all these players including Wes Pritchett, Ned Bolcar and Frank Stams on defense.

I always thought fullback Anthony Johnson was one of the best to ever play at ND.

As always Keith Arnold’s Irish NBC Sports article today is excellent.

Interesting – Notre Dame All Time Team

While twiddling my thumbs came across a Bleacher Report Notre Dame All Time Team. Found this very interesting and for the most part agree–lot of old timers but they were fantastic players and played both ways. Here’s where I disagree:

1–QuarterBacks–1–Lujack 2– Montana

2–Linebackers–Irons, are you kidding me. I’d replace Stonebreaker and Irons with 1- Bob Golic 2– Bob Crable

3–Teo and Jim Martin–fine except Martin played end for the most part former frogman in WWII and I believe he won the heavyweight Bengal Bouts.
I’d rank Martin before Teo.

Of course their were others including Steve Niehaus–injured a lot though.

Anyhow fun to go thru and think of other greats.

SECOND WEEK OF PRACTICE

We have a few clips from, of course, und.com which are somewhat interesting. Unfortunately, not enough to really see what’s going on, except from what I can see Golson moving ahead but then again, such a small sample makes it impossible to come to any conclusions–just the way Kelly wants it.

Don’t think we will really see much until ND walks out on field in Dublin. I can understand this but am reminded how Pete Carroll let everybody watch their practices USC saying watch all you want then try to stop us. Even when they were sanctioned they still beat us except for one fluke game.

Anyhow enjoy the clips–take a look at Nicky Baratti– looks like Harrison Smiths twin brother.

Week One Ends

Carlo Calabrese

Originally press were to see maybe an hour of practice Saturday but that did not pan out so we get just a few snippets of coach speak about team’s practice.

To sum up everything just going as expected although Kelly seems to be bringing more heat on Hendrix/Golson to step up–“won’t have Tommy to bail you out in Ireland”.

Alex Welch Tight End out for the year with torn ACL–Jake Golic moves in as # 4 TE.

Danny Spond–no one sure yet but on medical absence until issues resolved.

Team went on golf and picnic for the afternoon.

Both Rees and Calabrese sufficiently contrite when meeting reporters. Why do I have the feeling that Rees will be starter vs. Purdue in game 2?

Carlo # 44 should be able to easily move right back in rotation for Purdue game–getting lots of reps in practice. We are really going to need him–outside of Teo he’s the hardest hitter among the Backers. I always enjoy how he plays the game.

That’s it–just hope that team injury free for rest of camp and comes out of Navy game the same way. MWF –2 a days coming week.

Practice Day 5 Full Pads

Press allowed in to watch full practice and the first practice in full pads. I’ve also posted video from und.com of August 8th practice and Kelly’s post practice presser.

But first goddamnit’s of the year:

Jordan Prestwood 2nd team Left Tackle has left the team–personal matters. Here’s a kid with all the athletic ability to be a standout tackle and he had 4 years of eligibility left having sat out 2011 having transferred from Florida State. You might remember he was an original commit to ND then flipped to FSU. Getting kind of tired of these Florida recruits.

Danny Spond -drop linebacker out with concussion -problem here is history of C’s in high school. Ben Councell now has inside track on that position.

Alex Welch–Tight End–knee injury–full extent unknown at this time.

Cameron Roberson–RB–will never play–medical.

Looks like all 3 freshman receivers–Brown, Neal and Ferguson making big strides early and all 3 could play this year.

Lo Wood moving closer to locking down one corner.

Shembo and I. Williams fierce battle for other OLB position.

Troy Niklas TE just runs over defenders–big and strong probably doesn’t even describe this kid.

Don Bosco NJ safety Elijah Shumate moved to corner back–Kelly wants to get him on the field.

Notre Dame cannot have serious injuries coming out of Fall Practice–just don’t have the depth and facing the toughest schedule in college football this year as well as 2013.

Next practices closed so for now enjoy clips from und.com:
