Michigan State Spartans vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish Tickets

Let me start this column by saying MSU does not get the type of quality recruits that Notre Dame does, no one talks about what great classes they get each year. What they do get are hard nosed, tough kids that play 60 minutes. So, in all actuality these games should not be close but they always are. Why, great coaching.

They always play with a chip on their shoulders for the simple reason very few of them get offers from Notre Dame, Michigan or Ohio State. Feeling slighted they are jacked and out to prove they belong when they play these 3 teams. OK, so much for that–moving onto Saturday’s game.

Night game–ND does not play well at night games period. They always come out flat on offense and the “D” wilts in the 4TH quarter. Too late, Too tired–who knows. When you carefully look at this years edition of both teams–you think ND blowout, but that, of course depends on what ND team shows up(yearly refrain).

MSU got tattooed at Notre Dame last year 31-13 but interestingly out gained the Irish 358 yds -275 yds with a quality QB in Cousins who also threw a pick on ND’s goal line. The guy they have now is only starting his 3rd. college game(just like Golson) and should be a feast for this ND front seven. They should be able to shut down both the pass and the run, provided Diaco plays aggressive for all 4 quarters and doesn’t lapse into a prevent defense as he tends to do too often.

Advantage Notre Dame.

MSU defense–they have one guy on the DL to worry about 6’7″ 285 DE William Gholston–remember their All American NG Jerel Worthy now a pro but even with him ND was able to run inside last year. Expect lots of blitzing from MSU to rattle Everett Golson so look for roll-outs quick hitters. Probably MSU will Imitate Purdue and stack their defense which could help ND in this game.

Notre Dame on offense. Hoping that the ND OL got the full purple faced Kelly at practice this week. You take MSU’s Gholson out of the game by running right at him or away from him with frequent cut backs. Go wide but most of all play fast then faster. Since GAIII is so valuable with great speed I’d try him at WR–just race down the field, with Davonte Neal trailing–nothing but speed on one side with Eifert also going long on the opposite side–get the safety’s out of the running game.

The big question–the ND offensive line. What do we actually have–let’s see.

  • LT Zack Martin SR 6’4″ 304—touted by some for All American this year
  • LG Chris Watt SR 6’3″ 310–also highly regarded
  • C Braxton Cave 5th yr 6’3″ 304–some All American vibes
  • RG Mike Golic 5th yr 6’3″ 300–journeyman
  • RT Christian Lombard JR 6’5″ 309 since arrival considered a phenom

Just what every team wants –an experienced OL with quality at each position. Golic is the soft spot but after 5 yrs in system he should be able to at least get in the way once in awhile. Backup at guard Connor Hanratty + 300 lbs sophomore–do you play him?

No mention of Tate Nicols 6’8″ 320 with kneecap problems.

Advantage Notre Dame (maybe). As I said–all on paper but not on the field.

Prediction: Only if ND jumps out early.

Redemption Time

This week featuring Michigan State at night is the time for Notre Dame’s offensive line to show something more than the false praise heaped on them going into the season. Remember the concern that LT Martin and LG Watt would bolt early for the NFL, well forget that–neither would be drafted. And center Cave looking at an All American spot and contesting for the Rimington award–forget that too. Golic, while a nice guy with a good pedigree is simply not good enough to start. Next, the phenom Lombard that the coaches have been drooling over–reality set in.

This entire OL simply is not good enough to play with the big boys. They were mauled and abused by a good(not great) Purdue defensive line. Perhaps with one exception–Chris Watt at Left Guard they were a complete embarrassment and looked completely lost, in other words they got the s–t kicked out of them again–recall last years USC and Stanford games where they looked scared and played that way. They just do not show up when it counts especially in night games.

I thought with the addition of the new OL coach Hiestand, with Pro experience that was all to change. All we hear about him is what a nice guy he is and players like him. Well, after last weeks beat-down, does he have it in him to act more like Joe Moore and give them a brutal week of practice–ask Aaron Taylor what that was like.

Next, Defense. This is the type of offense that Carlo Calabrese can finally live up to his potential. MSU relies heavily on the run with big time running back LeVon Bell 6’2″ 245 lbs. If ND’s defensive line plays like expected both Calabrese and Te’o should have great opportunities to each have great games.

Carlo it’s time to step it up. Forget last week, I’ll write that up to rust. The 7 tackles were good but you did not have a good game and a non factor in all actuality. Let’s hope Diaco gives you the opportunity for redemption.

I don’t know why Kelly seems to have no interest in big Fullback types. I think Hughes or Jonas Gray would have scored near the end on Riddick’s run to set up the field goal.

So, another night game, an exposed OL and holes in the defense plus playing away, with MSU looking for revenge plus a very good coach in Dantonio spells a lot of trouble for this ND team.

With 20 recruits in the bag and a few more excellent recruits along with playing at night as an underdog, it’s critical that ND win this game.

Disaster Averted Notre Dame 20 Purdue 17

An unexpectedly tough Purdue team gave Notre Dame a far closer game than anyone expected, especially me. Game won in the closing minutes by Tommy Rees, who calmly led his team down to the 6 yard line and Kyle Brindza kicked the winning field goal. Game ball to Tommy.

2ND game ball goes to the Purdue coach Danny Hope for alternating QB’s when Marve was the far superior QB and already had an excellent first game passing for 300 yds.–thanks coach.

Golson, actually had a pretty good day 21 for 31 289 yards and one TD while the running game was entirely shut down 52 yards rushing on 36 carries. Purdue stacked the box and their interior linemen completely abused the ND offensive line especially Watt Cave and Golic.

Notre Dame had a slew of injuries, which we hope won’t keep them from playing against MSU.

Conclusions:

  • Golson can only get better with more playing time–at times he was somewhat rattled.
  • Kelly needs to get the plays in on time–thought this was corrected–guess not. He did make the right call going to Rees for the closing drive whether or not Golson hurt. Just too much pressure for his experience level.
  • Student fans–mindless idiots among them booed Rees–ND students should have more class. Do they really think Rees wanted to go in????? and flop, a lot put on his shoulders and he came through. If he screwed up can’t imagine fan reaction. Good job Tommy. Incidentally, he’s now over 4000 yards passing and closing on Montana.

Finally. Weis loses heart-breaker vs. Rice 25-24 on a 45 yard field goal in last seconds. Crist 33 of 64 313 yds. 2 TD’s BUT 3 Ints.

Doug Randolph 20TH Commit

Doug Randolph 6’3″ 236lb outside linebacker switches to Notre Dame. Commit to Stanford since June he backed away and briefly considered Virginia.

Notre Dame has a nice pipeline open to the Woodberry Forest HS in Virginia with CJ Proise enrolled and 2014 commit ILB Greer Martini both from the Virginia school.

This is a great pickup, Notre Dame now has 5 outstanding Line Backers–Anzalone, Deeb, Mattingly, Jaylon Smith and now Randolph. I would say these 5 as good(better) as any at any school in the country.

Tip of the hat to coaches Booker and Diaco for reeling him in.

  • So, not many openings left in this class. Would be nice to pick up at least one outstanding CB and WR.
  • Need 2 more defensive linemen–bigger the better. Maybe the Michigan game will complete this class.
  • Lot of talent in this 2013 class, which has to have the attention of guys ND is still chasing down.
  • Randolph commit will put ND in the top 5 for 2013.

Here is his highlight reel:

Notre Dame Vs. Purdue Game 2 of 2012 Season | Predictions

In all reality, this game should just be a tuneup for next weeks defining game against Michigan State for this Notre Dame team. We thumped them pretty badly last year(38-10) and there is no reason that we don’t just have a replay.

No injuries reported so this should be just reload and blow these guys out again. The Irish are helped by a mediocre team coached by the hapless Head Coach Danny Hope. He sports the mustache but is no Joe Tiller. Tiller ran a great offense and made average players look damn good and somehow or other always had a great QB. But that was then and this is now.

  • Notre Dame will look to run all over the Boilers, toss in a few passes while giving nothing away to MSU.
  • Look for Golson to do a little more passing–just to get used to it as a prep for next week. The ND defense front 7 should have a field day–it’s the secondary that is the only concern, although a big one.
  • They can keep Purdue in the game.

So flipping to Purdue, what should they do. Coach Hope, after winning his opening game, against Eastern Kentucky with senior QB Robert Marve going 30 of 38 295 yards and 3 TD’s will start the recently suspended senior QB Caleb TerBush. I think I would ride with the guy with one pretty good game under his belt, but then again I’m not Danny Hope.

Regardless, Purdue’s only chance is to pass pass and then pass some more and attack the weak link in the ND defense. Purdue on defense must try to make Golson pass and get ND in third and long by blitzing often–make Golson win this game with his arm.

Purdue has 2 quality defensive tackles in Kawann Short 6’3″ 315 and Bruce Gaston 6’2″ 303. Look for Short to line up against Golic while at the same time putting pressure on RT Lombard to collapse the right side of ND’s offensive line and get to Golson. That’s what I would do–will it work? Worth a try.

I see Notre Dame just wearing down Purdue on both sides of the ball and cruising to an easy win.

Moving Along

A few things we learned from Brian Kelly’s press conference:

  • GA III and Cam McDaniel both a little dinged up–that could mean anything.
  • Amir Carlisle finally cleared to play.
  • Matthias Farley # 2 behind Slaughter at free safety.
  • Freshman Nicky Barratti # 2 behind Motta at strong safety.
  • Rees back to getting reps and will compete for # 2 QB position, which in my opinion he will win.

Since playing a good option team it is really difficult to grade the secondary, but what I observed was a train wreck not only at CB but also at Safety. I don’t remember Slaughter making one play and did not see him at all. We know he played but was invisible. Zeke Motta, outside of one great hit did not have a good game at all. He looks really slow. If this senior cannot seriously upgrade his play, I look for Barratti to replace him at mid season.

Now, onto Purdue. Purdue coach Danny Hope will start senior QB Caleb TerBush over Robert Marve vs. Notre Dame but indicated Marve would also probably play. Marve was very impressive in Purdue’s opener and I would continue with him–when your hot your hot, especially against the woeful secondary Notre Dame displayed vs. Navy.

Considering Tommy Rees–he took himself out of the QB battle prior to Fall camp. He showed no improvement in Spring camp either. That is very strange, for usually a starter for 2 years shows big improvement going into his third year. Think it’s all mental with him after getting vilified towards end of last year. Here’s a highlight clip vs Purdue in 2011 and he looked damn good:

He also in game 2 of 2011 led a magnificent comeback against Michigan which was negated by ND’s secondary playing so ineptly that in the closing minutes Robinson just heaved 2 air balls to no one but were completed.

Great clip–so enjoy.

Alabama demolished Michigan 41-14 and kept Denard Robinson completely in check although he did pass for 200 yards but only ran for about 20 yards. Good, Saban just gave Diaco the blueprint.

In other news, Charley Weis won 1st. game at Kansas beating South Dakota State 31-17. Dayne Crist was 17 f0r 36 for 169 yards including a TD pass to Mike Ragone. Not quite 50% completion rate and he overthrew 3 times in the end zone.

Before closing thoughts on Notre Dame lets see what future opponents did yesterday:

  • Purdue beat Eastern Kentucky 48-6 QB Marve 295 yds. passing.
  • Mich. State beat Boise State 17-13
  • Michigan lost badly to Alabama 41-14 but Robinson 200 yds. passing.
  • Miami beat Boston College 41-32 Morris passed for 207 yds.
  • Stanford beat SanJose State QB threw just 125 yds.
  • BYU beat Wash. State 30-6 QB 285 yds. passing.
  • Oklahoma–no details yet
  • Pitt lost to Youngstown State 31-17 QB passed for 239 yards.
  • Boston College lost to Miami bot the BC QB passed for 441 yds.
  • Wake beat a high school 20-17 QB 195 yds. passing.
  • USC beat Hawaii 49-10 Barkley 351 yds. passing.

While the above tells us the scores I was more interested in the passing stats since the ND pass defense was atrocious. I am hopeful that this was due to the confusion the option attack presents and facing more traditional defenses we’ll see vast improvement. Not to optimistic about that.

All in all a good win and the subs and many freshman got on the field–that’s the only way you build quality depth.

Notre Dame 50 Navy 10

The Irish completely battered Navy in this season opener and Everett Golson played as well as could be expected. He has a tendency to stare down receivers and to look too often for Eifert. But, expected that safe comfort zone. He did find Troy Niklas on nice pass and catch and DeVaris Daniels had a few nice receptions.

The offensive and defensive lines just overwhelmed Navy. Ishaq Williams caused 2 fumbles, one of which was returned by Stephon Tuitt for 77 yards. Manti was all over the place and had a pick. Both running backs Riddick and Atkinson had a pair of TD’s. Roby Toma ran for a TD and Eifert also scored.

No sense going into the stats, the score says it all. The running game really hummed and the passing game was also OK for a first game. Lots of highlights in this game, but nothing can top Tuitt’s 77 yarder. So all in all a satisfactory start.

Big problem areas–special teams especially getting down field on kickoffs. The pass defense is a nightmare come alive. Navy receivers were wide open and in one sequence, 3 completions, 3 plays and touch down.

Conclusion, Notre Dame simply must outscore everyone from here on out and the defensive line must get to the upcoming QB’s or we are in a bad bad situation. I don’t have any idea how we can fix the CB’s shortcomings. But nice to win the opener and this win was important.
