Spring Practice

Notre Dame kicked off Spring Practice 3/20/2013 and Kelly has given a few press conferences which you’ll find all over the ND sites. One of his interesting comments concerned Special Teams.

He noticed that Alabama’s Special Teams had ALL starters on every ST so he’s thinking of copying that – I don’t agree with that since most injuries occur on ST’s and most starters don’t want to have anything to do with it.

There is no reason the 2nd teamers couldn’t handle that with the exception of punt and kickoff returners. And Bama has so much depth they don’t have to worry about injuries.

Other notes of interest – the ILB’s at least starting now Calabrese and Grace handling Manti’s position.

The OL starters for now – Z. Martin, Watt, N. Martin(C) Hanratty and Lombard. 2nd team – Stanley, Heggie, Hegarty, Harrell and walk on Furlong. Elmer missed practice due to a Flu or something.

Of course all this could change and Kelly stated the most important position is Center – so look for a fierce battle between N.Martin, Harrell and Hegarty there.

Outside of ND 5 Star ILB Alex Anzalone is out of Spring ball with a shoulder injury at Florida.

Here’s a brief clip from und.com showing snippets of a practice – really nothing there and we really won’t see much else until the blue gold game on April 20th.

Waiting For Spring Practice

At the end of this month Spring Practice will begin. The Blue Gold Game is set for April 20, 2013.

I guess the biggest news reported by Irish Sports Daily is the departure of QB Gunner Kiel who reportedly has already cleaned out his locker. This is rather strange – one would think he would at least give Spring Practice a shot to see where he stood on the depth chart. After all he still has to sit out 2013 no matter where he goes. Golson has 3 more years while frosh Zaire has 4, Rees 1 and Hendrix could apply for a 5th year. Kiel is more of a Pro Set QB and it will be interesting to see where he lands – he is the type of QB that Brady Hoke of Michigan covets – a drop back QB. I’m sure he will not lack for suitors.

Other News:

Basketball player Joey Brooks 6’6″ 225 has been added to the football team roster – TE or WR I would guess.

Tate Nicols giant OL is medically unable to play – too bad but he was hurt his whole career.

Scholarship offers for 2014 going out rapidly – about 100 or so with 4 commits in the fold.

Eddie Vanderdoes Makes It Big For 2013

5 Star All Everything DL picks ND over Alabama, USC and UCLA to make the 2013 class one for the ages. What a surprise on my part – but how great is this!!!

Just gotta give credit to everyone in the recruiting process on this , especially the parents. With all the other schools recruiting his 13 yr. old sister – parents saw through this disgusting ploy as did Eddie.

This is HUGE – probably ranks up there with one of the biggest surprises since Manti.

Just a great finish for 2013!!!!!

Here is his highlight reel:

National Signing Day

Ok – did good, all 23 commits have sent in their NLI’s. Had to wait awhile for Folston, but he signed up.

Now just waiting on Eddie Vanderdoes DL who will announce sometime tonight, would be the icing on the cake but I just don’t see it for ND.

All in all 23 great recruits for the 2013 class. Crown jewel – LB Jaylon Smith.

Andrew Antognoli added to the 2013 class a a Preferred Walk On. Ranked as a 5 star All American punter, he originally committed to Harvard before switching to Notre Dame.

Can always use a good punter so this is good news – quite possible he’ll earn a scholarship depending on how it goes.

Andrew is from Fresno Calif.

Recruiting Wind Down 2013

23 commits in and I would be happy at this point if we get 23 LOI’s. T. Folston RB looking shaky.

Wish List 2 DL:

  1. Eddie Vanderdoes 6’3″ 310 would get significant playing time in 2013 BUT he will visit Alabama this weekend, Of course, Alabama has about 20 DL ahead of him. All bets are off if McCarron’s girlfriend escorts him around campus. My guess UCLA.
  2. Kylie Fitts 6’4″ 260 think distance and cold big obstacles, although he too would probably play in 2013. My guess UCLA.

With that said, there must be some big 300 lb + Catholic HS players out there that would love to sign with ND – take a flyer and get a 3 star.

Irish Ink #23 recruit Commit Durham Smythe | 2013

Thank God for Irish fans – Durham Smythe a long time Irish fan and a de-commit from Texas doesn’t leave ND this weekend without committing to the Irish. 6’5″ 230 will add to the long line of Irish Tight Ends. I fully expected this but again the Notre Dame Nation is still strong across the land. Let’s face it – if Texas wanted him, that’s good enough. The guy has to be good and with so few offers left must be something the coaches liked. Great pick up for ND.

Now, we need the DL’s who visited–just have to wait on that to the last minute – if Fitts and Vanderdoes pull the trigger – very sweet finish.

At least for now let’s celebrate landing the next Tyler Eifert. Welcome aboard Durham – you’ll do great.

IT’S A BOY

As if the Manti story couldn’t get any worse – it just did. Manti’s girlfriend is actually Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, the originator of the hoax who is—-actually a guy impersonating Lennay Kekua.

Te’o spent hours on the phone with Ronaiah – there never was a girl involved. What makes this more bizarre is that others talked to her/him including Robby Toma and Manti’s Mormon Bishop. Apparently they also thought he/she was a girl.

This is so weird that no one could really understand how this fraud could possibly continue for so long,

It’s bad enough that Manti got scammed but that he spent hours and hours talking to a guy and not a girl. All of this is just laughing stock and will follow Manti forever – you just have to feel sorry for this guy. The name he was so proud of is now just a joke.

Nothing else to say here – just weird and really sad.

2013 Recruiting Class Winds Down

Well 2 weeks left until National Signing Day and this weekend Notre Dame has a number of recruits coming in – most already committed to USC. A new name popped up a de-commit from Texas TE Durham Smythe 6’5″ 230 who will bypass Michigan and visit ND for the weekend festivities.

Smythe is an interesting story – he has been a long time ND fan and felt ND was too late with their offer so he committed to Texas, now he’s available. Paired it down to Stanford (just visited) Michigan, whom he was scheduled to visit this weekend but jumped ND ahead – I think he commits this weekend, if all goes well. He’s a lot like Eifert in that he also played WR this year for his High School team. ND coach Scott Booker just visited him and got him for this weekend.

Here is his highlight video:

By my calculation we have 2 spots left and ND would really like to get DL Fitts and Vanderdoes – especially Vanderdoes – both scheduled for this weekend. Jaylon Smith will also be there to help in the recruitment.

If weekend goes well it will jeopardize 5th year for Fox or Calabrese or both. I really would like these 2 back. They can stabilize the middle and really help the young guy Grace who moves into Manti’s position. We already have a really young secondary and we don’t want to rookies as the inside backers
.
If I had to pick one, it would be Calabrese, who was terrific on short downs and goal line D.

Interesting weekend and I’m hoping for at least 2 commits – Smythe and Vanderdoes.

Manti Gives Interview

ESPN’s Jeremy Schapp had a lengthy interview with Manti and seems convinced that Manti not part of the wild dead girlfriend scheme. Here is the interview:

There are articles all over the place slicing and dicing. Easy enough for you to find on your own. Manti has lived his whole life in a protective bubble and I, for one, believe he was perfect for this scam.

There is some female out there who is real and who did indeed talk to him continually – let the detectives out there find her get a picture, name and publish it and force her to give a statement.

In Today’s New York Post – an article and picture of a real and according to her Manti’s current girlfriend identified as Alexandra Del Pilar a student at St. Mary’s College, the sister school of Notre Dame.
