Golson Gone

Everett Golson QB starter is no longer enrolled at Notre Dame. Student privacy just leaves it at that.

So – big wrench thrown into the football program with just Rees, Hendrix and freshman Zaire left. Why the hell didn’t this happen before Kiel left – what a big mistake that kid made.

Probably never will find out the reason for Golson’s departure but that leaves Kelly with a real coaching challenge. Rees looks like the starter now and maybe the football God’s will hit him with a little extra mobility and arm strength – after all ND is God’s team so anything can happen.

Walk On Defensive Tackle 2013 Class

marquis dickerson notre dameMarquis Dickerson 6’3″ 275 Defensive Tackle from Arkansas has decided to skip a scholarship offer from a small Arkansas college and apparently has accepted a walk on offer from Notre Dame. He will report join the team in August.

This is the type of kid you all must really pull for – the reason – that he wanted to challenge himself in both football and academia. Stating he will start out on the practice squad but fully expects to earn a starting position down the line – hope he becomes a star and hope the 2013 football class gives him the full welcome.

So as we await word on the Eddie Vanderdoes situation, this guy Dickerson is just about the same size and ” I’m too big to be worried about a little snow”.

Well he’s no 5 star so there is maybe a real Rudy moment for this kid. I’d love to see him excel and bolster a soon to be a a decimated DL in 2014.

Rumors Eddie Vanderdoes / Notre Dame

Lots of speculation out in California that 5 Star DT 6’3″ 285 trying to get out of his commitment to Notre Dame. Nothing direct from Notre Dame or Vanderdoes yet but this does not look good – expect some clarification soon. This is too hot with freshman class to report on June 17.

If rumors are true, you have to ask yourself what a signed LOI really means anymore and if he defects it throws a big wrench into the DL not only for 2013 but more importantly for 2014 when most of the current DL will be gone.

Old saying smoke = fire well we shall see.

Commit # 10 For The 2014 ND Class

Offensive Tackle Alex Bars 6’6″ 295 became the 4th OL to commit in this class joining Byrne, Mustipher and Nelson on the line. Current 4 Star from Nashville Tenn. with offers everywhere including Penn State and Michigan where his brothers play. His father Joe Bars played for Gerry Faust at Notre Dame. That should just about close out OL recruiting for this class – but one more out there that ND is pursuing.

Now it comes down to numbers – believe only 8-9 slots left. So ND’s sitting pretty going into the summer. Like to see us get a BIG Nose Guard now.

Here is his highlight reel (he’s #70):

Quenton Nelson OT 9th Commit for The 2014 Class

Notre Dame picks up big time recruit as Quenton Nelson 6’5″ 295 lbs from Red Bank Catholic HS NJ commits to the 2014 class. That makes 3 OL for the class. Nelson as an OT joins OG’s Byrne and Mustipher.

Everybody wanted this kid – OSU, Alabama, Oklahoma, Stanford and about 40 others – great, great pickup for ND.as they stock up on OL – guess they take just 1 more for this class that would give them 2 OT’s and 2 OG’s. Really exciting news for Irish fans.

Here’s a clip of Nelson – he’s #56 LT in film – he really has a motor – so enjoy.

In other news Roby Toma a free agent with the Baltimore Ravens.

Elijah Hood Commit Number 8 Class 2014

Notre Dame finally lands a blue chip power running back in 5’11” 221 Elijah Hood from Charlotte Catholic HS in North Carolina. Weekend visit with parents seals the deal. He is currently rated higher than both 2013 RB commits and he brings power and speed – great pickup for the Irish.

So lets see that’s 8 so if total we can take is around 20 that leaves only 12 slots left – so again any guy out there with an offer better get aboard soon or might miss out. This big time commit could cause a snowball effect with other elite recruits considering ND. Catholic HS’s coming through again.

Other news – John Goodman free agent with Cinncy Bengals joining Eifert.

As expected Nic Weishar 4 star 6’5″ 215 Tight End from Marist HS Chicago committed to Notre Dame thus continuing the TE tradition. Good Hands and Good Speed and family longtime ND fans.

This is the TE Notre Dame really wanted. that makes 7 commits for the 2014 class. Big pickup for the Irish.

Here’s clip of Weishar in action:

Blue Gold Game

Very little can be drawn from this “scrimmage” so it was just bland as usual for an outing like this. Kelly was not going to give any of his real offense for others to plan on. That being said there was some good hitting from the linemen on both sides of the ball. Chris Watt LG did not play Tackle Ronnie Stanley took his place.

Thoughts on the performances:

Offense needs a lot of work – just not crisp at all. Quite frankly I really expected much better play or at least an offense that was in sync.

QB’s:

  • Golson started out very shaky missing 2 easy plays in flat and unfortunately he reverted back to sandlot ball which just cannot happen in real games.
  • Rees – boy do I wish he had a stronger arm and just a little mobility – he sure looks like a QB that would be starting on many other teams.
  • Hendrix – unfortunately he just has not progressed.
  • Zaire – Frosh – big kid with a strong arm (lefty) real nice pass to Prosise for a TD – kid will be good in a few years.

RB’s – hurting here and would not be a surprise if the freshmen coming in move to the front:

  • George Atkinson – unfortunately he just looks like a track-man playing football. Very fast running just straight ahead, has trouble cutting, does not look to have the swivel that good backs have. Straight up runner that was really blasted by Carlo Calabrese.
  • Cam McDaniel – just a more complete RB than Atkinson. Beautiful catch and run. Will play a lot this year.
  • Will Mahone – disappointed, thought he would be the big power back.

Others worth mentioning:

  • TJ Jones and D. Daniels looked real good.
  • Troy Niklas (TE) kid is just a monster at 6’7″ 260 – expect big year from him.
  • Steve Elmer OT freshman – big kid working with the 2nd unit already. Bright future.

Defense:

  • The DL for the most part won the battle in the trenches. NT Kona Schwenke destroyed Center Bruce Hegge for a safety.
  • Carlo Calabrese hardest hit of the game when he almost killed George Atkinson.
  • Jarrett Grace filling Manti’s old position looked pretty good.
  • Jarron Jones – really expected better showing.
  • Lou Nix – comic relief scoring 2 pointer with a QB draw. He just does not look in shape to me–sure he’s big but man he better put in a lot of work this summer.
  • Punt Returners – looked like they wanted to get out of consideration–certainly no Tommy Z with this group.
  • Punters – horrible. Must be some kid on the rugby team better than these guys.

Now we just have to wait for the Opener against Temple – in the meantime here’s game highlights provided by und.com
